Granville Mall: Enhanced Existing Concept
On March 21 Vancouver City Council met to hear from city staff, designers, business and the public about which option to choose for the Granville Mall Redesign. They met for almost 4 hours and in the end decided they didn’t have enough time to make a decision so they adjourned the meeting until April 04.
On April 04 council met again and spent almost 2.5 hours debating an option that city staff had put forward which would have seen cars introduced back onto the mall. Again it was decided, not by consensus though, to postpone the decision until April 18th.
Hopefully Vancouver will make a decision April 18th and vote to enhance the mall by making the sidewalks wider, putting in more trees and keeping car traffic off the mall.

April 18 2006 Update:
City Council voted in favour of the “Modified Enhanced Existing” concept recommended by Vancouver city staff. I believe the motion that passed was:
“A. THAT Council approve advancing the “Modified Enhanced Existing” concept to the final design stage with modifications to maintain vehicular access along the 900 block as now and to increase occasional vehicular access through the mall by expanding the eligibility of Granville Mall access permits and planned to accommodate two rows of
trees on either side of the street.
B. THAT staff report back on the resources required for undertaking the final detailed design and consultation process, including a schedule for completion and funding sources.“
Councillor David Cadman was responsible for moving the successful motion.
